🤓 NerdSquad Notes 26.02: Fair isn't Flat

Fair isn't Flat

We like neat lines, clean charts, checkboxes that tick themselves, and schedules that don’t fight back. But fairness - real fairness - isn’t like that. It isn’t a spreadsheet with a perfect column for every student. It isn’t a menu of options that all look the same on the surface. Genuine fairness has texture. It has corners that need patching. It has places where we ask questions we don’t already know the answers to.

In classrooms, schools, and workflows the flat version of fairness looks like: everyone gets the same worksheet, the same timer, the same number of minutes. But equal slices don’t always feed hungry minds. Equity isn’t about sameness, it’s about fit. It's about giving people what they need to engage, understand, and thrive. That means the work isn’t tidy, and it isn’t flat. It’s layered. It requires us to listen before we plan, observe before we assign, and adjust long after the bell rings.

This month we’re exploring what fair isn’t so we can better see what it actually is. Not compliance, not convenience, not optics, but thoughtful action that meets learners where they are and helps them get where they’re capable of going.

📚 House of EdTech – Episode 241 on Neurodiversity and Learning

This episode does a solid job translating neurodivergent experiences into language neurotypical educators can actually hear. It explores how attention, regulation, and engagement work differently for some learners, and why systems built for “average” brains often miss the mark. A good listen if you want a clearer picture of why fairness needs flexibility baked in, not bolted on after the fact.

📖 I’m Busy Being Awesome – Episode 334: ADHD Relaxation, Why Traditional Rest Doesn’t Work

This episode explains why advice like “just take a break” or “try to relax” can fall flat for ADHD brains. It digs into how nervous systems process stimulation, safety, and rest differently, and why what looks restorative for one person can feel stressful or inaccessible for another. A powerful way to understand why equal expectations don’t always create equitable outcomes.

✨ Hot Tips, Calm Brains

1. Add a “How This Can Look” Line to Assignments

Before you post or hand out an assignment, add one extra line that says: “This can look like…” followed by 2–3 examples. Bullet points, audio response, short paragraph, diagram, etc. This tiny move helps students who struggle with ambiguity without changing the task or grading criteria. Fairness with texture, no extra prep.

2. Flip One Instruction into Audio

Take one written instruction or announcement and record a quick audio version. Most LMS tools, Google Docs, or even email let you do this fast. If this feature isn't readily available in your platform, look at tools like Beep, Mote, or ScreenPal. This supports learners who process auditory language better and models that text is not the only valid format for understanding.

3. Say the Why Before the What

Before giving instructions, name the purpose. “Here’s why we’re doing this…” Context helps learners who struggle with motivation, transitions, or buy-in. It costs nothing and often prevents confusion before it starts.

Mindful Moment: Try the “Quiet Start” Routine

Start class with two minutes of quiet, low-stakes entry. No talking, no instructions beyond “get settled.” Students can write, doodle, breathe, or just arrive. This helps regulate nervous systems and creates a softer on-ramp into learning without calling it mindfulness. Having some relaxing music or a video to go along with your two minutes of nothing really helps. Find something that fits on YouTube or Spotify, or use ours.

🧩 Featured Tools: Giving Learners Control Over the Text

Fairness isn’t about lowering expectations, it’s about removing unnecessary barriers. These two tools do that quietly by letting learners control how they interact with text, without changing the task itself.

Microsoft Immersive Reader is built into many Microsoft tools and does one thing exceptionally well: it lets readers customize their experience. Learners can adjust spacing, font, background color, and line focus, listen to text read aloud, break words into syllables, and translate content into multiple languages. The content stays the same, but the access changes. That distinction matters.

Read&Write for Google Chrome is an extension that brings similar support directly into Google Docs, Slides, PDFs, and web pages. Text-to-speech, speech-to-text, word prediction, and built-in dictionaries help learners who struggle with decoding, writing, or processing keep pace without needing separate tools or special workflows. Support lives where the work already is. The premium version is free for all K-12 teachers.

Together, these tools reinforce a simple idea: consistency in expectations paired with flexibility in access. Same learning goals, different paths in. That’s fairness with texture.

Finish Strong May always feels like the longest mile of the race. The finish line is finally in sight, but somehow the days feel fuller, the patience feels thinner, and the burnout feels very, very real. If you are running on fumes and counting down to summer like it is a rescue helicopter, you are not alone. But this last stretch does not have to be about just surviving. It can be about finishing with purpose, protecting your energy, and reminding yourself that you are still capable of...

The Power of We Teaching can feel like an individual sport played at team-level intensity, which is a cruel little joke when the workload starts stacking up. Collaboration reminds us that we were never meant to carry all of it alone. When educators share ideas, divide the mental load, and lean on each other’s strengths, burnout loses some of its grip. Support does not always have to be dramatic. Sometimes it looks like a shared lesson, a quick hallway brainstorm, or someone saying, “I’ve got...

The March Engagement Reboot March has a particular flavor. It tastes like half-charged Chromebooks and motivational speeches that nobody ordered. The shine of January goal-setting has worn off. Spring break is looming like a mirage. Students are restless, teachers are tired, and everyone is quietly calculating how many instructional minutes stand between them and summer. The March Engagement Reboot is not about turning your classroom into a circus or adding twelve new strategies to your...
